Fifth Annual Ice Breaker Wakefest!

This year’s charity event includes professional wakeboarding demonstrations, wakeboarding/skiing clinics, slalom ski course, on-water demo rides/pulls for participants, new equipment displays and demos, bag-go tournament, charity run/walk, Luau and local community food concessions.

Kendallville, IN – The organizers of the Ice Breaker Wakefest are expecting big things this year. “With the ability to use Bixler Lake and Park, we will be able to really grow,” says Zach Lear, one of the organizers of the annual event. “This event has grown every year. By moving to Bixler Lake Park, we can add activities, make the Icebreaker bigger and turn it into a community event,” continues Lear.

The Ice Breaker Wakefest is an annual charity wakeboard and ski event. All proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society. It is called the Ice Breaker because the water is cold this time of year and the event originally began as a meet and great to get to know local riders.

The center of activity is on-water demonstrations and clinics by professional wakeboarders and skiers along with the opportunity for area water enthusiast to make a donation and try out some the sports newest gear…particularly the latest in Nautique ski boats provided by Dry Dock Marina.

The annual fundraiser will be held Friday and Saturday May 21-22 at Bixler Lake Park in Kendallville. “With the combined help of Mayor Handshoe, the DNR, and the Kendallville Park Department we are allowed to exceed the 10 mph speed limit on Bixler Lake for the first time since some time in the 1960’s,” states Lear.

The 2010 Ice Breaker Wakefest starts Friday night at 8:00 with hog roast and music from Crossing Center. Saturday at 6:00 am Dry Dock Marina will be unveiling their brand new Ski Nautique 200 for slalom ski runs. Throughout Saturday there will be professional wakeboarding demonstrations including rail jams behind jet skis from Hayden Honda. In addition to the professional wakeboard demonstrations, participants will be able to make a donation to the American Cancer Society to wakeboard and wake surf behind brand new Ski Nautique 210 and 230 boats on Bixler Lake.

In conjunction with the water activities, there will also be a 3.5 mile charity run/walk, bag-o tournament as well as a raffle for wake equipment and prizes. Local not-for-profit community groups are expected be on hand selling food. The Kendallville Fire Department will have a display of new lifesaving equipment and be practicing water rescue. Sunday Hayden Honda Powerhouse will be holding in-water demos of the latest in Honda watercraft.

Local sponsors include Dry Dock Marine Center, Stewart, Brimner, Peters, and Lear, Dependable Metal, Hayden Honda, Campbell & Fetter Bank, Rock 104, Wild 96.3 and Special Moments. Equipment Sponsors include Nautique, Spy Optic, Slingshot, Gator Wakeboards, and onlyinboards.com.

Admission is free for spectators the day of the event, $25.00 donation to ski/wakeboard, $15.00 donation for walk/run, and $20.00 donation for Bag-O tournament. First place for Bag-O will be a custom set of IBW Bag-o Boards/bags. Friday night’s Luau is $5.00 or register for an event.

About the Icebreaker Wakefest
The Icebreaker Wakefest was originally staged in 2006 at a private residence on Sylvan Lake and moved to the Jean Stratton Porter historical site on Sylvan two years later. The goal was to showcase the sport of wakeboarding while raising funds for the American Cancer Society. It has grown to become a well-attended pre-season wake event. 100% Of the entry fees are donated to the “American Cancer Society.”
